Emissions avoidance

Reducing the carbon footprint of corrugated packaging

At McLaren Corrugate, we recognise that while corrugated packaging is one of the most sustainable materials available, its production is energy intensive. To reduce the associated greenhouse gas emissions, we source corrugated sheet board manufactured using renewable, low carbon energy. This approach allows us to offer packaging that is both high-performing and environmentally responsible.

Packaging production powered by waste

The corrugated packaging industry already benefits from a highly circular model, with fibres recycled multiple times. However, energy use in the production of corrugated board has historically relied on fossil fuels. A new approach is changing this.

We work with CorrBoard Bioenergy, the world’s first waste-to-energy facility designed to fuel corrugated sheet board manufacture with renewable energy. Located next to our sheet supplier CorrBoard, the plant produces clean heat and electricity from food and drink waste, significantly lowering the carbon footprint of corrugated packaging.

How it Works:

  • More than 25,000 tonnes of organic waste are diverted from landfill each year
  • The waste is processed via Anaerobic Digestion (AD) to create biogas
  • Biogas is burned to generate renewable heat and electricity
This energy powers the production of corrugated sheet board at CorrBoard
  • Any excess renewable electricity is exported to the national grid, further avoiding fossil fuel emissions

Making it circular

The natural bio-based and biodegradable alternative to fossil-based products, corrugated sheet board is made from paper and starch from wheat or maize.

Corrugated paper packaging is highly recyclable and fibres can be reused multiple times. The corrugated industry is sustainable by design, circular by nature and innovative.

CorrBoard UK, the supplier of our corrugate, enables us to produce low carbon corrugated sheet board produced from renewable energy, powered by food and drink waste.

We are the only UK packaging company to offer a truly circular solution for paper-based packaging users where a customers' waste can be used, to power the conversion of the next generation of their corrugate packaging.
